1967 Ford Mustang GT-500 interior with woodgrain trim, automatic…
The interior of a 1967 Ford Mustang GT-500 features woodgrain accents and an automatic transmission.
SHELBYS SOPHISTICATED SUPERCAR Hood louver treatmen matic and 3.50 gears and, for all practical purposes, was a prototype. It was not assembled at the AD. Smith Plastics Division in Ionia, Michigan, which is the new manu- facturing site of GT Mustang pro- duction. This was a hand laid up job, which was evident by the way the frontal fiberglass parts fit. The hot setup option package was de- signed for compromise applications Mand not for serious performance use. Wevvere pleasantly surprised, as the car did come off pretty well on the bottom end, with the super-high at- Wood-g dyapplique and padded vinyl set off the interior. Roll bar is standard. 38 0 SPEED & SUPERCAR a carryover deal from the late 67 air-conrl ed GT-SOO. low-rpm torque 427 backed up by a C-6 auto with a 2.46 First. The only way to really appreciate the GT-SOO is to get out and flog it. Basically its a Mustang, but it rides, handles and performs like a GT-SOO Cobra. Its not a sports car or a street corner racer. It can be set up for super street stuff but it takes plenty of coins and you risk the pos sibility of not being welcome back at your Ford dealer for service. As we said before, its a compromise machine. The biggest single plus-feature of Top scoops vent the interior, while the lowers cool the HP-lined 10-inch rear brakes. the Gt-SOO is its styling. Its a Mus- tang all right, but the scoops, stripes, wall-to-wall blinkers and fiberglass stuff really do a transformation. Sur- prisingly, most of the goodies serve functional purposes. The lower scoops vent the 10inch drums (spe- cial HP linings), the upper scoops vent the interior, and all those blinkers (sequential) really work. Once you slip inside you immediate- ly know changes have been made. The cockpit is super plush-almost too civilized for a high performance GT. The padded roll bar is gr0~ tesquely set off by yards of fakey imitation woodgrain applique and soft padding. The seats are bucket as far as general classification goes, but they do little in the line of lateral support or body control. But thats show biz! All you have to do is pump the pedal a couple of times, twist the key and 427 live ones rumble to life. Since the engine in Cour hybrid was not really outfitted with the latest in smog control stuff and was in tune, the rumble sounded good. The optional engine used here is a single Holley (600 cfm) job which pumps out 400hydraulic4ifter- horsepower at 5600 rpm and 460 foot pounds of torque at 3200 rpm. As you can seeiand feel once you wheel it a bititop torquecomes in at the right time for
ormal street driving. The only real._.pr0b (Continued on Page 62)
