FOR SUNDAYS ONLY (continued from page 37) the same on all 428s, but compression ratios are alterable through the use of different pistons and head gaskets. Max- imum available compression ratio ob tainable with Ford parts at present is 11.611 and minimum is 10.5. Turner also informed us that pop-up pistons are on the drawing board, indicating that development of the 428 is no one shot deal; rather, it appears to be a long term project to be carried over several seasons, similar in some aspects to the numerous progressive steps Chev- rolet followed in the development of their small inch series. There are two sets of rockers avail- able for the 428, a 1.76:1 non-adjustable type and a 1.73:1 adjustable. The mani- fold on your 428 may be either steel or aluminum, as Ford produces identical manifolds in the two different metals on a mixed run production line. Regard- less of which you choose, several car- buretors are available. Our test car was tted with a 7350fm model Holley. Ignition is Fords tried and proven dual point distributor, which puts out plenty of juice regardless of use. Clearances in the SS/E model Cobra Jet are, as expected, set up looser than those in the stock-stock version. They go like this: .0035 on the rods; .003 on the mains: .040 side clearance on the rods, and .007 to .008 piston to wall. Total combustion chamber and piston head ccs gure out to 80, with 6800s of this in the head itself. Under the car once again, we found that the traction bars on the SS/E are the same as those FoMoCo built into their many funny cars, and we can understand why. In a word, they get the job done. Headers are by Jardine and the slicks used in our test were Good- year 10.50 x 15 D4s. After getting just the facts, mam we were already to watch Don go through his professional paces behind the Wheel. On ring, the engine gives off a roar that can only be produced by a bunch of cubes. You all know it- low and throaty. The only burn-out Don made was behind the line, on the apron leading to the tree. Then, working the slick-shift modied box, Nick came up with the following numbers: 11.62 e.t. and 119.70 miles per hour. Throughout the next thirty minutes or so, Nicholson and Ford teammate Hubert Platt (Im just lookin around) wrung out the SS/E using all the knowledge their years at the helm of hot iron have led to. When it was all over, the average gures for the many tests were 11.67 seconds at 119.21 mph and the Cobra Jet wasnt even breathing hard. No overheating, no oil smoke. It just sat there, almost asking to be tried again. But we didnt have to. We were convinced. I DO ALL MAKES RUN BETTER WITH CRANE? LISTEN: "Dyno" Don Nicholson: "Nothing runs better in a Ford motor than 3 Crane Cam. Period." Pete "Super Shaker" Seaton: "We've tried everything else . nothing works as well as Crane in our Chevy." Don Gay: "We have found nothing better for Pontiacs than Crane Cams and heads." Larry "Superfish" Reyes: "For our MoPar plant, we started with Crane - V and have found no r reason to switch."
