The 1984 Toyota 4Runner reached US dealers partway through the model year as a two-door 4x4 with a removable fiberglass rear top over a Toyota pickup chassis. Power came from the carbureted 2.4L 22R four, and the leaf-sprung solid front axle carried over from the 1979-1985 solid-axle Toyota pickups. That factory front axle makes 1984 and 1985 the only 4Runner years that need no front-end swap for a solid-axle build.
