The 1989 Toyota 4Runner closed out the first generation, and with it the removable fiberglass top that defined the 1984-1989 trucks. Engine choices carried over: the 116 hp 22R-E four or the 150 hp 3.0L 3VZ-E V6, both with part-time 4WD. The fixed-steel-roof second generation, which added a four-door body, replaced it for 1990.
