The 1988 Toyota 4Runner brought the first V6 to the line: the 3.0L 3VZ-E, rated at 150 hp, sold alongside the standard 116 hp 22R-E four. The body remained a two-door with the removable fiberglass top, riding on torsion-bar IFS with a leaf-sprung solid rear axle. V6 trucks used the stronger R150F five-speed rather than the W56 fitted behind the four.
