The 1985 Toyota 4Runner added the fuel-injected 22R-E four, rated at 116 hp, to the two-door removable-top body introduced the year before. It is also the final year of the leaf-sprung solid front axle; every 1986 and later 4Runner switched to torsion-bar independent front suspension. That makes 1985 the only model year that pairs the 22R-E with the stock solid axle.
