This is a VERY common problem with this style of shifter: the boots crack, allowing water & dirt inside, where it fouls the push-down mechanism, causing the operator to use excessive force, usually breaking the cast Aluminum shifter housing.
This lower boot has drained dry, but it's loaded with dirt & rust.
Recently, Dorman has begun offering this shifter as 600-602; ~$90 on Amazon.
