The 1985 Ford Escort was a split year. Early cars carried over the 1.6L CVH four, then the mid-year 1985.5 revision brought a smaller grille, flush aerodynamic headlamps, and a 1.9L CVH rated 86 hp (net), with the Escort GT receiving a 108 hp (net) high-output version. The first-generation bodyshell introduced for 1981 continued underneath the new front end.
