The 1988 Ford Escort received a mid-year restyle commonly called the 1988.5, with smoother front and rear fascias, integrated plastic bumpers, enlarged rear side windows, and 14-inch wheels on non-GT models. Motorized front shoulder belts were added to meet passive-restraint rules. The 1.9L engines gained a revised camshaft with roller lifters, and the fuel-injected GT rose to 110 hp (net).
