The 1996 Ford Explorer added V8 power for the first time, with a 5.0-liter overhead-valve V8 rated at 210 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, initially in two-wheel-drive four-door models. The 4.0-liter overhead-valve V6 remained the base engine. The 1996 Explorer continued in four-door and two-door Sport bodies on the Ranger-derived body-on-frame chassis, across XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trims.
