The 1998 Ford Explorer continued the second generation with the 4.0-liter overhead-valve V6, the 205-horsepower single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6, and the 5.0-liter V8. It remained on the Ranger-derived body-on-frame chassis in four-door and two-door Sport bodies, with rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive depending on configuration, across XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trims.
