The 1997 Ford Explorer added a single-overhead-cam (SOHC) version of the 4.0-liter V6 rated at 205 horsepower, more than the overhead-valve V6, along with a five-speed automatic and a new electronic transfer case. The 5.0-liter V8 became available with all-wheel drive for 1997. The 1997 Explorer continued on the Ranger-derived body-on-frame chassis in four-door and two-door Sport bodies across XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trims.
