The 2000 Ford Explorer continued the second-generation lineup with the 4.0-liter overhead-valve V6, the single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6, and the 5.0-liter V8. The 2000 model year is when the Ford and Firestone tire controversy began, as tread separations on certain Firestone tires fitted to Explorers were linked to rollover crashes and Firestone announced a recall of millions of tires.
