2004-2008 Ford F-15011th-Gen F-150

2004–2008 60+ on the wall

The eleventh-generation Ford F-150 covered the 2004 through 2008 model years and was the first F-150 built on a fully boxed frame across the line. It launched for 2004 with two engines, a 231-horsepower 4.6L two-valve Triton V8 and a new 300-horsepower three-valve 5.4L Triton V8, both driving four-speed automatics. A 4.2L Essex V6 returned as the base engine in regular-cab two-wheel-drive trucks from 2005, and a five-speed manual remained available, with 2008 the last F-150 model year offered with a manual transmission. Ford sold the body in Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew configurations. For 2004 Ford also kept the previous-generation truck in production as the F-150 Heritage, a rebadged 2003 model offered in XL and XLT trim alongside the new design. Trims expanded over the run to include XL, STX, XLT, FX4, Lariat, the King Ranch, a returning Harley-Davidson edition, the FX2 Sport, and a supercharged Foose Edition for 2008.

Engines and transmissions

The 2004-2008 Ford F-150 launched for 2004 with two engines. The base V8 was the 4.6L two-valve Triton, rated at 231 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque from 2004 through 2006 and revised to 248 horsepower and 294 pound-feet for the 2007 and 2008 model years. The step-up engine was new for this generation: a three-valve-per-cylinder version of the 5.4L Triton V8 producing 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, available across all five model years. A 4.2L Essex V6 served as the base engine, offered on regular-cab two-wheel-drive 2005-2008 F-150 trucks. The 4.6L drove a 4R70E four-speed automatic and the 5.4L used the 4R75E four-speed automatic. A five-speed manual was also offered during this generation, and 2008 was the last F-150 model year available with a manual transmission. A flex-fuel version of the 5.4L V8 became available on the 2006 and later F-150.

Frame, suspension, and brakes

The 2004-2008 Ford F-150 was built on a fully boxed frame, replacing the open C-channel sections used on much of the prior generation, which increased torsional stiffness. The front suspension remained an independent design and the rear used a live axle on leaf springs in the conventional pickup layout. The F-150 of this generation used four-wheel disc brakes with antilock braking. A Heavy Duty Payload Package was offered on 5.4L trucks with the eight-foot bed, adding a reinforced frame and suspension and a larger rear axle to raise the gross vehicle weight rating.

Body styles and beds

The 2004-2008 Ford F-150 was sold in three cab styles: the two-door Regular Cab, the extended SuperCab with rear access doors, and the four-door SuperCrew. Bed lengths included a shorter box and a 6.5-foot box on most configurations, with an eight-foot box available on selected models. The SuperCrew of this generation paired the four-door cab with a usable bed, and Ford added a regular SuperCrew variant in 2008 to broaden the lineup.

The 2004 F-150 Heritage carryover

For the 2004 model year only, Ford continued building the previous tenth-generation truck and sold it as the 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage, a rebadged 2003 model offered in XL and XLT trim and in Regular Cab and SuperCab forms. Ford kept the older body in production to avoid retooling every assembly plant at once and to offer a lower-priced alternative while the new eleventh-generation truck ramped up. The 2004 Heritage used the prior truck's 4.2L V6, 4.6L V8, and 5.4L V8 engines and is mechanically distinct from the new 2004 F-150.

Trims and special editions

The 2004-2008 Ford F-150 was sold in a range of trims that included XL, STX, XLT, FX4, and Lariat. The King Ranch luxury trim, with Castano leather, was offered on this generation. The Harley-Davidson edition returned to the F-150 for the 2006 model year and was offered in SuperCrew form from 2007. Ford added the FX2 Sport, a two-wheel-drive appearance package, for 2007. For the final 2008 model year Ford offered a 60th Anniversary package and the Foose Edition, a factory-associated truck with a supercharged 5.4L V8.

Was there an SVT Lightning on this generation?

No. The supercharged SVT Lightning ended after the 2004 model year, and that final 2004 Lightning was built on the outgoing tenth-generation platform, the same architecture as the 2004 F-150 Heritage, not on the new eleventh-generation F-150. Ford chose not to introduce a Lightning on the 2004-2008 F-150, so there is no factory SVT Lightning within this generation. The performance interest in this era instead centered on the 2008 Foose Edition with its supercharged 5.4L V8.
