The 1971 Ford Pinto was the first model year of Ford's subcompact, introduced in September 1970 to compete with imported economy cars. It launched as a two-door sedan with a fastback roofline, joined in February 1971 by the three-door Runabout hatchback. The base engine was a 1.6 L (98 cu in) Kent inline-four rated near 75 hp gross, with an optional 2.0 L (122 cu in) overhead-cam inline-four rated about 100 hp gross. A four-speed manual was standard and a three-speed automatic was optional.
