The 1972 Ford Pinto was a carryover of the subcompact introduced for 1971, now offered in three body styles after a two-door station wagon joined the two-door sedan and three-door Runabout hatchback. Ratings switched to SAE net this year, dropping the 1.6 L (98 cu in) Kent inline-four to about 54 hp and the 2.0 L (122 cu in) overhead-cam inline-four to about 86 hp. A four-speed manual was standard with a three-speed automatic optional. The rear-mounted fuel tank of these early Pintos later drew scrutiny over fire risk in rear-end collisions, the subject of the Grimshaw v. Ford litigation involving a 1972 car.
