The 1991 GMC Jimmy marked a transition year for the nameplate. It was the final model year for the full-size Jimmy, GMC's K5-based SUV on the 1973-1991 GM full-size truck platform, which was replaced by the GMC Yukon for 1992. For 1991 the compact S-15 Jimmy added a four-door body style alongside the existing two-door, both powered by the 4.3L (262 cu in) V6 and available in rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. After 1991 the S-15 prefix was dropped and the compact was sold simply as the GMC Jimmy.
