The 1990 Mazda Miata reached United States dealers in May 1989 as the first model year of the NA generation, reviving the lightweight rear-wheel-drive roadster with a 1.6-liter DOHC four rated at 116 horsepower and 100 lb-ft. Curb weight was about 2,180 pounds, the base price was $13,800, and a 5-speed manual was the sole transmission at launch. An aluminum Power Plant Frame rigidly connected the transmission to the differential, and the launch palette consisted of Classic Red, Crystal White, and Mariner Blue.
