The used 120-grit pad wasn't cutting it, so I switched to a used 80-grit. When that started coming apart, I put on a new 80 & got down to some metal. Then I wire-brushed some of the areas the sander wouldn't fit, and rinsed it.

I'll let it dry for a day or 3, & maybe I'll go back with the 120.
