The 1981 Ford F-150 dropped the M-series 351M and 400 V8s as a fuel-economy move, leaning on the 300 inline-six and the lighter 302 and 351 Windsor V8s. Ford's AOD four-speed automatic overdrive transmission became available with the 302, adding an overdrive top gear to improve highway fuel economy. The truck kept the 1980 seventh-generation body and the Twin-Traction Beam front suspension on 4x4 models.
