VDO Programmable Speedometer Wiring Diagram D - Hall-Effect, Inductive, ECU Pins
Screen capture of a speedometer wiring diagram showing sender, battery, fuse block and labeled pin connections.
This document is one page of the VDO Programmable Speedometer installation instructions (VDO part number 0 515 012 051, visible in the browser tab and PDF URL), showing "Diagram D — Proper wiring of the speedometer." It presents three wiring scenarios for the speedometer's 8-pin connector on the back of the gauge. Scenario 1 (top, partially cropped) shows wiring with a Hall-Effect sensor: the off-white wire goes to pins #6 & #8 via a butt splice, the black sensor wire to pin #3, the red sensor wire to pin #2, with battery power and pin #4 connections. Scenario 2, "Modified install," shows an inductive sender wired to pins #7 and #8, with ignition, fuse block, light switch, battery, pin #4, and pin #3 (ground) connections. Scenario 3, "original install," shows an electronic transmission setup where the signal wire from the electronic transmission box / electronic control box connects to pin #8, again with ignition, fuse block, light switch, pin #4, and pin #3 connections. A reader learns which speedometer connector pins receive power, ground, illumination, and speed-signal inputs depending on whether a Hall-Effect sensor, inductive sender, or electronic transmission signal is used.

Frequently asked questions
- Which pin does the speed signal wire from an electronic transmission box connect to on the VDO programmable speedometer?
- In the "original install" diagram (scenario 3), the signal wire from the electronic transmission box / electronic control box connects to Pin #8 on the back of the speedometer.
- How is a Hall-Effect sensor wired to the VDO programmable speedometer?
- The black sensor wire goes to Pin #3, the red sensor wire goes to Pin #2, and an off-white wire is butt-spliced to Pins #6 & #8.
- Which pins does an inductive sender use on this speedometer?
- In the "Modified install" diagram, the inductive sender connects to Pin #7 and Pin #8 on the back of the speedometer.
- What other components are shown in the wiring diagrams?
- Each install diagram shows a battery, fuse block, ignition switch, and light switch wired to the speedometer, along with Pin #4 and Pin #3 connections and grounds.
- What is Diagram D in this document?
- Diagram D shows proper wiring of the speedometer with (1) Hall-Effect sensors, (2) inductive sensors, or (3) electronic transmissions.
