The 1972 Mercury Marquis closed out the 1969-1972 full-size generation, keeping its hidden headlamps and 124-inch wheelbase for a final season. The 429 cu in V8 continued as the standard engine, now advertised in the lower SAE net figures adopted industry-wide that year. The 1973 replacement would be restyled around the new federal 5-mph bumper standard, making 1972 the last pre-impact-bumper Marquis.
