The 1981 Mercury Marquis rode Ford's downsized Panther platform, introduced for 1979 with a 114.3-inch wheelbase replacing the old 124-inch chassis. The base engine was the 4.2L (255 cu in) V8, with the 5.0L (302) optional, the 5.8L (351) available for the last time this year, and Ford's AOD 4-speed overdrive automatic on the option list. Marquis, Marquis Brougham, and Grand Marquis trims made up Mercury's full-size line.
