The 1988 Nissan Maxima closed out the model's first front-wheel-drive generation, which arrived for 1985 with the VG30E 3.0-liter SOHC V6. It sold as a sedan or a wagon, and 1988 was the last year Nissan offered a Maxima wagon in the US. The sportier SE trim paired the V6 with an available 5-speed manual.
