The 1972 Pontiac Firebird switched to SAE net horsepower ratings, so the 455 HO now read 300 hp net rather than the 335 hp gross quoted in 1971. A months long UAW strike at the Norwood, Ohio plant gutted the model year, and only 1,286 Trans Ams were built. GM openly weighed cancelling the F body during the stoppage.
