The 1979 Pontiac Firebird set the nameplate's all time production record at about 211,000 cars, more than 117,000 of them Trans Ams. A new front end placed four square lamps in individual pods with no exposed bumper. It was the last year for the Pontiac 400, a 220 hp net W72 built from stockpiled engines and sold only with the 4 speed manual, and the 10th Anniversary Trans Am ran 7,500 copies.
