The 1999 Ford Focus was a European-market car, as North America did not receive the Focus until the 2000 model year. Ford launched the first-generation Focus in Europe in the autumn of 1998 to replace the Escort, and it won the 1999 European Car of the Year award. European engines included 1.4 and 1.6-liter Zetec-SE fours, 1.8 and 2.0-liter Zetec-E fours, and a 1.8-liter turbodiesel.
