AMC reworked the 1976 Jeep CJ5 around a stronger boxed frame shared with the new, longer CJ7. The AMC Model 20 rear axle replaced the Dana 44, and a one-piece fold-down windshield frame replaced the earlier design. Engines carried over, with the 232 six standard and the 258 six and 304 V8 optional (net-rated), still through the Dana 30 front axle and Dana 20 transfer case.
