I also got sick of fighting the vacuum-operated HVAC controls (which later turned out to be caused by a worn-out engine), so I swapped in this '87-early '88 panel with independent cable controls.  Only the recirculation uses vacuum.

But the main advantage is that it allows independent seelection of where the air comes IN, where it goes OUT, and whether or not the compressor is on.  On all other '80-up controls, those 3 functions are linked to a single control: slide on '80-91; rotating knob on '92-up.  This panel also has an indicator light for the compressor clutch.
