Ford Automatic Transmission ID Guide - C4, C6, FMX, C3 Pan Shapes 1960-78

This reference page is an automatic transmission identification guide for Ford Motor Co. vehicles, allowing identification of the transmission type by the shape of its oil pan and filter. It covers six transmission families: the Borg Warner unit used in the 1971-74 Capri (rectangular pan with fifteen pan-to-case mounting bolts); the C/3 used in 1974-78 Bobcat, Capri, Mustang II, and Pinto (square-shape bulge on the front passenger side); the C/4 with several pan/filter variants for all 1964 models, 1965 Mustang with 170 and 260 engines, 1966-69, 1970-78 (except 1970 Maverick 170 & 200 with PEB code), 1970 Maverick 170 & 200 with PEB code, and 1974-78 Mustang and Pinto (pan almost square or square with a bulge at the front corner passenger side, eleven mounting bolts); the C/6 for 1966-74, 1975-78, and 1973-78 Ford Truck with 4WD (recess at rear corner passenger side); the 3-speed medium case (MX) for all 1961-67 and 1968-69 (rectangular bulge on passenger side); and the 3-speed small case (FX and FMX) for all 1960-67 and 1968-78, plus 1973-74 with the 400 engine and Borg Warner transmission (small recess on the front driver's side).
