Ford Rear Axle Unit-Bearing (TSU) Installation Instructions - Grease & Oil Lube

This is a manufacturer's instruction sheet (printed in English, French, and Spanish) for installing a pregreased 'unit-bearing' (TSU-type sealed rear axle wheel bearing) on automotive rear wheel applications. It explains that the bearing comes pregreased and works with either grease lubrication or oil lubrication supplied from the axle center, and it notes that for non-automotive-rear-wheel uses the bearing must be cleaned, lubricated, and installed to OEM specs. For grease lubrication, extra grease is applied between the inboard seal lips and the housing cavity is filled 1/3 full; for oil lubrication, the factory grease is not removed because it is compatible with rear axle oil. A six-step installation procedure covers: cleaning the axle and removing nicks/burrs (requiring a .001" minimum interference fit for the cone and .004" for the locking collar), installing the clamping plate, greasing and sliding on a new outboard seal, placing the unit-bearing with its rib ring facing the axle flange, fitting a NEW locking collar, and pressing bearing and collar until seated (verified with .001" feeler stock). Warnings caution that heating the cone or collar, or improper interference fits, can cause the wheel and axle to separate from the vehicle. - How much grease should be added when using grease lubrication with the unit-bearing?
- In addition to the grease already contained in the bearing, apply grease between the lips of the inboard seal and fill the housing cavity between the seal and the bearing 1/3 full of grease.
- Should the factory grease be removed if the axle uses oil lubrication?
- No. Do not remove the grease in the pregreased unit-bearing, as it is compatible with the rear axle lubricating oil. Just verify the axle center oil level is adequate.
- What interference fits are required on the axle for the cone and locking collar?
- The cone seat must provide a minimum .001" (0.025 mm) interference fit, and the locking collar seat a minimum .004" (0.100/0.102 mm) interference fit. Failure to provide these fits may result in the axle separating from the vehicle.
- Can the cone or locking collar be heated to ease installation?
- No. Do not heat the cone or locking collar, as this may damage the bearing or affect the locking collar's holding ability, which could cause the wheel and axle to separate from the vehicle.
- Should the old locking collar be reused?
- No. The instructions specify placing a NEW locking collar adjacent to the unit-bearing before pressing both into place.
