B&M 45050 Short Throw Shifter Install Instructions - 1983-2003 Mustang T-5/T-45
B&M short-throw shifter installation-instruction sheet for 1983-2003 Mustangs with step-by-step text and a figure.
This document is the first page of B&M Racing and Performance Products installation instructions for the Short Throw Shifter, Part Number 45050, designed for 1983-2003 Ford Mustangs equipped with Borg Warner T-5 w/OD, T-5, or T-45 manual transmissions. The shifter provides shorter throws than stock and accepts the stock Ford knob or any replacement knob with an M12-1.75 thread. It notes that for custom applications (such as street rods) the stick can be reversed by removing the four hold-down bolts and rotating the shift rod assembly 180 degrees. Step 1 of installation covers unscrewing the stock knob, removing the console boot and cover plate, unbolting the stock stick, and removing the floor-pan rubber boot (retained by four screws that should be saved). Tips include using a swivel socket on an extension for the hard-to-reach front hex head screws, avoiding separating the rubber boot from its stamped steel mounting ring (held by steel staples), and inspecting the boot afterward — a replacement Ford boot part number (#E7ZZ-7277-B) is given if it is torn. Figure 1 shows the shifter with callouts for the washer positioned for rearward bias setting and the stock Ford bushing; the shift knob is not included. Copyright 2003, 2000; document number 9500548-07. Note: hardware (socket head bolts and washers) is photographed lying on the page, obscuring part of the figure.
This document covers 1983-2003, which may differ from this 1998 Ford Crown Victoria.

Frequently asked questions
- What vehicles and transmissions does the B&M 45050 short throw shifter fit?
- It is designed for most 1983 to 2003 Ford Mustangs with the Borg Warner T-5 w/OD, T-5, or T-45 manual transmission.
- Does the B&M short throw shifter come with a shift knob?
- No. The figure notes the shift knob is not included; the shifter uses the stock Ford knob or any replacement knob with an M12-1.75 thread.
- Can the B&M 45050 shifter stick be reversed for custom applications?
- Yes. For custom applications such as a street rod, remove the four hold-down bolts, turn the shift rod assembly 180°, and reinstall the four bolts.
- What Ford part number replaces a torn shifter boot?
- The instructions recommend Ford boot #E7ZZ-7277-B if the original rubber boot is badly torn.
- How is the rubber boot attached to its steel mounting ring?
- It is originally held together by steel staples through the rubber into the steel; the instructions say to try not to break the boot loose from the stamped steel mounting ring, and to reattach it with a small bead of weather strip adhesive.
