The 1996 Volkswagen Passat added the TDI, the first direct-injection turbodiesel Volkswagen sold in North America. Its 1.9-liter four produced 90 horsepower and 149 lb-ft and paired with a 5-speed manual. The gasoline range carried over, with the 115 horsepower 2.0-liter four in the GLS and the 172 horsepower VR6 in the GLX.
