The 2002 Volkswagen Passat introduced the W8, whose 4.0-liter eight-cylinder stacked two narrow-angle banks into a compact W layout producing 270 horsepower and 273 lb-ft through standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. It was the first eight-cylinder engine offered in a Volkswagen-brand car. Mainstream B5.5 models used the 170 horsepower 1.8T, uprated from 150 horsepower with the mid-2001 facelift, or the 190 horsepower 2.8-liter V6.
