The 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD split the model year between two Duramax diesels: trucks built early in the year used the 300-horsepower LB7, while the LLY arrived mid-year with a variable-geometry turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation, and ratings of 310 horsepower and 605 pound-feet. The 6.0-liter Vortec and 8.1-liter big-block gasoline V8s continued, with the Allison 1000 five-speed available. It was also the final year for the light-duty 8,600-pound-GVWR Silverado 2500 that had anchored the nameplate since 1999.
