The 1983 Ford Ranger launched the first-generation compact pickup, replacing the Mazda-built Ford Courier with a truck Ford designed and built in North America. The 1983 Ranger used the 2.0 and 2.3 Lima four-cylinders with the 2.8 Cologne V6 optional, and offered a Mazda-sourced diesel. Two-wheel-drive trucks used the Twin-I-Beam front suspension and four-wheel-drive trucks the Twin-Traction-Beam layout on a Dana 28 front axle.
