The 1978 Ford LTD closed out the 121 inch wheelbase generation, the last truly full-size LTD before the downsized 1979 model. V8 availability ran from the 302 up through the 351 and 400 to the 460, and 1978 was the final year for the 460 in Ford's full-size cars, with the 460 police package remaining a fixture with highway patrols. The unrelated midsize LTD II sold alongside it.
