The 1988 Honda Civic launched the fourth generation on the EF chassis, bringing double wishbone suspension at all four corners, a layout US Civics kept through 2000. Engines moved to Honda's new D series, with the dual-point injected D15B2 in volume trims. The multiport PGM-FI D16A6 debuted in the related CRX Si and reached the Civic Si hatchback the following year.
