The 1996 Honda Civic introduced the sixth-generation EK platform. The US engine ladder was all D series: the 106 hp D16Y7 in CX, DX, and LX trims, the 115 hp lean burn D16Y5 in the new HX coupe, and the 127 hp D16Y8 SOHC VTEC in the EX. The HX also offered a CVT, the first continuously variable transmission in a US Civic.
