The 1997 Ford Falcon was the Australian EL series, the final evolution of the platform introduced with the 1988 EA. A 4.0 litre SOHC six was standard, the XR6 ran a hotter version of it, and the XR8 kept the 5.0 litre Windsor V8. Ford had retired the Falcon name in the United States in 1970; by 1997 the badge was exclusively Australian, with the all-new AU due in September 1998.
