5.9L 6-CYL CUMMINS B SERIES TURBO DIESEL - VIN [8] FTf Highlighted Article Text 1989 Dodge Pickup FUELINJECTION PUMP , V r -. 1 1 Removal 1) Disconnect and remove throttle linkage and shutoff valve wire. Remove support bracket from rear of fuel injection pump. Remove and cap all fuel lines from fuel injection pump. Remove turbo boost line. CAUTION: Mark location of fuel supply line banjo bolts at fuel filter and fuel pump prior to removal. See Fig. 23. Smaller orifice is used in banjo bolt at fuel pump than at filter head. DO NOT remove throttle control lever from pump shaft. # Holdadelivery valves on fuel injection pump with wrench while removing highpressure lines. Mark fuel line location prior to removal. 2) Remove oil fill tube from front timing gear cover. Place shop towel in front of fuel pump drive gear to prevent retaining nut and washer from falling during removal. Remove ful pump drive gear retaining nut. DO NOT allow retaining nut to fall into front timing gear cover. M 3) Engine must be positioned at TDC of No. 1 cylinder. Engine can be rotated by removing dust cover from transmission adapter plate and installing Engine Barring Tool (3904682) in adapter plate. See Fig. 24. / 4) Rotate engine clockwise until No. 1 cylinder piston is at TDC. When No. 1 cylinder is at TDCK key of fuel injection pump shaft should be pointing toward bottom of engine. Engage timing pin. See Fig. 24. CAUTION: Use care when engaging timing pin to avoid breaking tip of timing pin. Ensure timing pin is disengaged before rotating engine. 5) Note if timing marks on fuel injection pump flange and gear housing are aligned for reassembly reference if original pump is installed. See Fig. 13. These timing marks apply to each engine and fuel injection pump. Timing marks cannot be used to exchange fuel injection pumps. 6) Loosen lock bolt on fuel injection pump and remove special washer. See Fig. 13. Tighten lock bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m). Retain special washer for reassembly. 7) Using gear puller and two M8 X 1.25 bolts, pull fuel pump drive gear free from fuel pump shaft.
