The 1960 Volkswagen Beetle was the last model year sold in the US with the 36 hp (SAE gross) 1192cc engine; the 40 hp unit arrived for 1961. A front anti-roll bar was added this year to steady the swing-axle chassis. US-market cars had already used flashing turn signals in place of semaphores since 1955.
