The 1962 Volkswagen Beetle added a mechanical fuel gauge, ending the reserve fuel tap arrangement drivers had flipped with their foot when the tank ran low. Larger taillights and a spring-loaded hood also arrived this year. The 1192cc engine, uprated to 40 hp SAE gross for 1961, carried over unchanged.
