The 1971 Volkswagen Beetle adopted dual-port cylinder heads, lifting the 1600 to 60 hp SAE gross, with a vented engine lid to feed the hungrier engine. The Super Beetle debuted alongside the standard sedan, using MacPherson strut front suspension to open up a much larger front trunk. Flow-through ventilation with crescent-shaped exhaust vents behind the rear side windows appeared the same year.
