The 1969 Volkswagen Beetle made double-jointed independent rear suspension standard on US models, replacing the swing axles that had defined Beetle handling for three decades. An electrically heated rear window also joined the equipment list this year. The 1493cc engine and its 53 hp SAE gross rating carried over from 1968.
