The 1968 Volkswagen Beetle brought box-section vertical bumpers, an external fuel filler flap that ended hood-up refueling, and dual-circuit brakes. The optional Automatic Stickshift, a clutchless three-speed with a torque converter, arrived the same year and brought double-jointed rear axles with it. The 1493cc engine continued at 53 hp SAE gross.
