The 1967 Volkswagen Beetle moved to a 12-volt electrical system in the US and picked up the 1493cc 1500 engine, rated 53 hp SAE gross. US cars switched to upright sealed-beam headlights a year before European models gave up the sloped, glass-covered lamps. Backup lights became standard equipment the same year.
