The 1978 Ford E-150 was the last full model year for the third generation's original round-headlight front end, used since the body style's 1975 introduction. Ford was courting the custom van boom of the era, offering the factory Cruising Van package with graphics and interior upgrades rather than ceding that market entirely to aftermarket converters. Mechanically the van stayed the course: the 300 cubic inch inline six standard, the 351 Windsor V8 optional, and 124-inch or 138-inch wheelbases on the body-on-frame chassis.
