The text explains that the EVR solenoid is an electromagnetic device controlling vacuum output to the EGR valve: current in the coil induces a magnetic field in the armature, pulling on a disk that closes the vent to atmosphere. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) outputs a duty cycle to the EVR to regulate vacuum level to the EGR valve, as duty cycle increases, so does the vacuum signal. The vacuum source is manifold vacuum. On some applications a current-control thermistor compensates for extreme temperature operation; the EVR solenoid and thermistor are serviced as an assembly.
