Turn Signals / Emergency Warning/Stop Lights Turn Signals How They Work . . . When the ignition switch is in the RUN position . . . I power is made available to the turn signal circuit through fuse 9 (15 amps) the turn signal flasher is located in series between the fuse and the turn signal switch (lever) as the turn signal lever is moved to a turn position, the switch closes the circuit to the turn signal lamps I this causes power to flow through the flasher and as it interrupts the circuit, the turn signal lights blink Trouble-Shooting If turn signal lights blink on one side only or In a single location . . . I check for burned out bulbs I check for continuity to that location(s) I check for ground at socket Checking Turn Slgnal Socket For Continuity if turn signals fall to operate . . . I turn ignition switch to RUN position I place turn signal lever to a turn position I check for light at turn signal bulb (no blinking) I repeat for other direction If there is light at any turn signal position (no blinking) . . . I replace turn sngnalflasher If this doesn't correct condition or if therewas no light atany position . . . I turn on emergency warning flasher If emergency warning asher doesn't operate . . . I check for secure connection between turn signal switch connector(s) located under instrument panel, near steering column I check for continuity at fuses 8 and 9 if the emergency warning flasher operates , V . I check fuse 9 I check fuse to flasherwiring I check flasher to turn signal switch wiring lf wiring is OK... I place turn signal lever in a RH turn position I unplug turn signal switch connector I check for continuity through the turn signal switch To check for continuity of the turn signal switch (In RH position) . . . I use a self-powered test light I connect a probe to the connector going to the white wire with black stripes and to the solid black wire Check continuity in the LH position . . . I use a sell-powered test light I test between connectors to green wlre with white stripes and the solid black wire it there is no continuity in either position . . . I replace the turn signal switch Emergency Warning Flasher How it Works . . . The emergency warning flasher circuit has power at all times. When the HAZARD button is pulled out , . I power passes through fuse B to the emergency warning flasher unit I the flasher unit supplies power to all of the turn signal lights and indicator lights through the turn signal switch Trouble-Shooting lithe emergency warning hustler falls to operate . . . I check fuse 8 if fuse 8 is OK . . , I check for stoplight operation if brake lights work . . . I replace emergency warning flasher unit If the stoplights fall to work . . . I check the feed to fuse B for power. repair as necessary I check for continuity between fuse B and flasher (power to flasher) "there is power to the asher . .. I replace emergency warning flasher unit If this doesnt correct the condition . . . I check for continuity from flasher to turn signal switch I unplug the turn signal switch connector check for continuity along the white-red striped wire leading from flasherto switch If there is continuity along the white-red striped wlre t . . I replace the turn signal switch Stoplights How They Work . . . When the brake pedal is applied i . . I the stoplight switch is closed I powerthen is routed through theturn signal switch to the Stoplights Trouble Shooting lftho Stoplights fail to operate . . . I check fuse B IffuseslsOK . .. I check for emergency flasher operation if the ashers fall to operate . . . I check for power to fuse 8, repair as necessary I check for continuity from fuse to stoplight switch (power at switch) "there Is power at stoplight switch or If ashers operated . . o I Jumper across stoplight switch terminals I check for stoplight operation if stoplights come on . . . I replace stoplight switch If they do not come on... I check for continuity between connector and stoplights If there Is no continuity . . . I check for looseness or damage at tum signal switch connector I check for solid connection red-black striped wires leading into connector tfthese check out OK i . o I replace turn signal switch Backup Lights How They Work . . . With the ignition switch In the RUN position i . . I and the transmission shift lever is in the REVEFlSE position I power is routed through fuse 11 lo the backup lights Trouble-Shooting if a single backup light falls, perform the following tests in order . . . I check for burned out bulb I poor ground at bulb socket I power feed to socket If both bulbs fail to operate. . . I check for a blown fuse (windshield washer pump operation will confirm a good fuse) if the fuse ls OK or a new fuse doesnt correct condition . . , I check for power to backup light switch, repair feed as required I jumper across terminals of backup switch it backup lights come on . . . I replace backup light switch
